- Summative assessment is generally carried out at the end of a course or project. In an educational setting, summative assessments are typically used to assign students a course grade.
- Formative assessment is generally carried out throughout a course or project. Formative assessment, also referred to as "educative assessment," is used to aid learning. In an educational setting, formative assessment might be a teacher (or peer) or the learner, providing feedback on a student's work, and would not necessarily be used for grading purposes.

hi Nikki!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
How would you use both forms of assessment in your teaching?
I would use summative assessment by doing unit test etc as way to assess what material the students have mastered and what material may need to be re-taught. I would use formative assessment as a daily part of class discussions. I would engage the students in dialogue that would tell me a little bit about how they feel about the material and they way it is being presented to them. They would have the opportunity to give me feedback; this would allow me to see if they are really grasping the concepts without a formal assessment/ test. It is casual enough to be thought of as fun for the students but still informative enough for me to use and an assessment method.
